When Abel Marmaduke left the shores of England in the 17th century bound for India, he embarked on a journey that would shape generations of the Carter family.
Abel Marmaduke Carter enjoyed success in India, married and started a family. Generations later, Maurice William Carter was born in June 1934 in Cawnpore, now Kanpur, raised in Lucknow and educated at La Martiniere College.
At 14, Maurice was orphaned. Two years later, with no immediate family, he joined the Merchant Indian Navy. Sailing around the world became both an education and a new family.
Maurice excelled in boxing and became Naval champion, with no defeats in 39 fights. In his early twenties he arrived in England, married and later raised his two sons as a single parent.
His determination, drive, sacrifice and belief in treating people equally, with politeness, respect and love, remain central to the Carter family story.
